The Surroundings of La Paz

Valley of the Moon

Close to the city of La Paz is the Valley of the Moon; an area that defies the imagination of visitor and generates the sensation of being out this World by the surreal shapes that have been sculpted on the land by water through countless years. Land formation show great resemblance to volcanic craters and a maze of tiny valleys has been created.

Park of Mallasa

With an extension of 74 ha, the park is an area of relaxation and recreation very near the urban radius of the city of La Paz. It is a Wide plateau with a slight decline covered by a large quantity of eucalyptus trees and green areas for sport and recreation as well as some cabins for refuge with their own rentable barbecue. Some football and volleyball fields make it a pleasure for our sports people.

Zoo of Mallasa

In front of the Park of Mallasa you'll find the Zoo of Mallasa, with a Wide range of the Bolivian flora and fauna. A quiet place,with a great view on the surroundings of La Paz.

You can even find the Condor over here. Behind the zoo you can do some quad and horseback riding.

The Devil's Tooth

Is a peculiar rocky formation and great natural observatory in the outskirts of the city with a natural monolithic rocky elevation of 150m of height. Its form resembling a great decayed molar tooth, which has given it its name, stands out from the surrounding landscape in the south of the city of La Paz. One route to reach this attraction is a path accessible through the touristic area of Mallasa. From the summit one has a unique view of the city and its surroundings.

The Souls Valley

Located at the top of the mountainous areas of the southeast of the city, it is a geographical landscape of impressive and great magnitude very near the city of La Paz. It is a landscape of eroded rocks grouped in clusters or rows that show hundreds of peaks or needles that ride to great height, some of which resemble the giant tubes of musical organs.

Palca Canon

The canyon is a singular geologic formation located near the Souls Valley. A set of monumental rocky formations of up to 200 meters height surround a flat area that serves as an easy pathway between them throughout the extension of the Canyon. The Canyon begins in Abra de Ovejuyo and ends 8 kilometers downhill in the Palca area.

The Zongo District

The Zongo Valley lies to the north-east of the city of La Paz where the Andes Cordillera Real. This is a spectacular area that no traveler should miss. The road leads from the fork to Chacaltaya and quickly descends through mountain scenery to lush vegetation and a warm climate.

The Mercado de Hechiceria (Witches' Market)
The Mercado de Hechiceria, where potions and charms designed to placate the Aymara spirit world are readily available, is La Paz's most colorful site. The perennial bestseller is the dried llama foetus, a ghoulish charred skeleton to be buried in the foundations of new homes or offices to ensure future prosperity.

Cementerio

If you are in La Paz than you have to visit the cementerio it sounds a little bit strange but it is a graveyard different from others.

The Cementerio General is situated on the Avenida Baptista you can get there by minibus or taxi.

MUSEA

Coca museum

The city's best museum tackles the thorny issue of coca with an informed and objective jaunt through the history of the much-maligned coca leaf. Surprisingly insightful, it leaves you to make up your own mind about a continually contentious topic.

National Art Museum

Great variety of  paintings, dating from the virreinal to modern times. Famous painters like Cecilio Guzmán de Rojas and Melchor Pérez de Holguín, as well as examples of several local art traditions as the paceña and the potosina show their great artistic capacities.

National Ethnography and Folklore Museum

Museum designed in the racially mixed baroque style exhibiting archaeological pieces of the "Chipaya" (ethnic group located in Oruro) and the "Uru" cultures. In the upper level is the exhibition hall of textiles from various parts of Bolivia.

Museo Costumbrista

In this museum it is possible to appreciate the diverse habits of the city in several dioramasand scale models. They show famous people in historical facts like the hanging of Murillo and the execution of Tupac Katari.

Coastal Museum

Dedicated to the war of the Pacific of 1879, in which Bolivia lost its sovereignity over the Pacific ocean, and to its main defender and hero Eduardo Avaroa.

Precious Metal Museum

The museum presents manufactures of goldsmiths and cermamics of pre-Columbian times. The gold room protects very valuable  objects made in this precious metal, like pectoral bandsearrings, and ornaments for blankets and dresses. An outstanding object is the the "Magna Source" with between 3000 and 3500 years of antiquity. Also, a reconstruction of the interior of a "chulpa" (funeral tower), with mummies and offers is displayed.

Murillo´s House Museum

This one is dedicated to the patriotic Pedro Domingo Murillo and the revolution of July 1809. The following rooms of exhibition: the room of furniture, room of the presidents, room of crafts and the room of the baroque nativity on the ground floor, and the colonial picture gallery, room of the conspiracy, oratorio and dormitory on the first floor.

Museo de Instrumentos Musicales de Bolivia

In these rooms national and international musical instruments dating with peculiar characteristics are exhibited, many of them created by the composer and charranguista Ernesto Chavour. You can even find a five-braced guitar over here.

Museo de Arte Contemporaneo Plaza


This popular museum has three floors of modern artworks set in a striking old colonial building (Gustave Eiffel was involved in the design), plus a peaceful on-site cafe. The standard of the works can be variable, but the setting is attractive.

Shopping Norte

If you want to buy some clothes than we can recommend you to go to Shopping Norte. There are several shops where you can find the things you maybe want. The shop on the first level Cielo Coleccion offers a lot of brands.

Mega Center La Paz

Mega Center La Paz is a big mall with a Bowling, indoor football and many shops you will find here the better brands. The Mega Center gives you the opportunity to feel at home for at least a moment it is set up like it is in America or Europe. You will also find a cinema with more than 10 big screens.

Zipline close to La Paz
